White Sparrow formed in 2011 as collaboration between Canadian mezzo-soprano, Debi Wong and Norweigan lutenist, Solmund Nystabakk. This Helsinki-based duo is dedicated to presenting unique programs that cultivate an interest in lute and vocal music from the Medieval period though the early Baroque.
Since their debut in 2011, White Sparrow has presented a number of recitals in Helsinki, including: “Short Stories From The English Renaissance” and “Loves Me, Loves Me Not: Love and Drama in 17th c. Italy” at Arkadia International Bookshop, and “Iltavirsiä (Evening Hymns)” as well as “Kolme Kuningatarta” (A Tale of Three Queens) on the Malminkirkko Concert series. The duo has also made appearances in Nowary presenting “Mister Dowland’s Midnight” in SØrfold, and “La Musa, La Musica” at the MODUS festival in Oslo. In July 2012, White Sparrow was selected as the winner of the NORDEM EAR-ly competition for young early music ensembles in the Nordic countries.
White Sparrow launched their 2012 – 2013 season with a debut in Sweden on the Stockholm Early Music Festival Concert Series. In the spring, they will also debut in Canada and the USA, appearing on the Silk Purse Music Series in West Vancouver BC; the Vancouver Art Gallery’s “Out For Lunch” Recital Series, and the Midtown Concert series presented by Gotham Early Music Scene in New York City. This summer White Sparrow will appear at the BRQ Vantaa Festival in Finland, as well as the Laus Polyphinae Festival in Antwerp, where they have been selected as one of only six ensembles to participate in the International Young Artist Presentation.
