Thank you to everyone for your well-wishes as Solmund Nystabakk (lute) and I travelled to Norway to compete in the NORDEM EAR-ly competition! The competition is for young early music ensembles living in the Nordic countries, so we decided to enter our new ensemble “White Sparrow”. Solmund and I formed the ensemble in 2011 and the EARly competition marked the end of our debut season. We were beyond excited to be awarded first place, and we are even more excited about our 2012 – 2013 season: we will debut in Sweden, Canada and the USA. If we are passing through your area, please say hello!

Love and Revenge for a Summer Evening

by David Gordon Duke for “Musical Notes” (Vancouver Sun Blog)

June proved quite the month for singing, and a nicely intimate recital by mezzo Debi Wongmarked the end of a month of vocal showcases.

Wong, just back in town for the summer after Yale (and before embarking on a doctorate in Finland), put together a high-concept program on the perennially useful theme of love and revenge with keyboard player Christopher Bagan: fascinating music for a summer evening in a great location (St. Phil’s Anglican in Dunbar) for early music.

I’ve had my eye on Wong for a few years now; this proved the best chance I’ve had to assess both her instrument and her development. For an early music singer, her tone is rich and (dare one say it) sexy. In her performance of Italian repertoire from the 17th century she made it clear that her damsels in distress weren’t going to simper by with “oh poor me” resignation. She brings a theatrical edge to her work, and is relatively light on the early music virtuoso effects that come with an overactive fixation on ornamentation.

A particular focus was music by Barbara Strozzi, the composer born in Venice in 1619 and adopted (hmm…) by the powerful Strozzi famiglia. Three Strozzi showpieces with plangent chromaticism showed just how good Wong’s precise tuning and overall musicianship is. And, of course, how interesting Barbara’s long neglected music can be.

Thank you very much to the Silk Purse in West Vancouver for hosting Margit Juhasz and myself last week. Our recital titled, “La Femme Fatale” was a great success and we are extremely grateful for our supportive audience. As some of you may know, Margit and I met in our undergraduate degree, and we have been performing together for the past seven years. ”La Femme Fatale” marked the beginning of a series of recitals we hope to give over the next few years. We hope you will be able to join us for our next recital!
